Scripture reference: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it.” — Luke 14:28 NKJV
In business, we often set out with great intentions, envisioning success and growth. But as Jesus points out in Luke 14:28, the journey from vision to reality requires careful planning. When He speaks of “counting the cost,” Jesus is calling us to intentional preparation, urging us to set clear goals and evaluate the resources needed to achieve them. This wisdom is just as applicable to our business lives as it is to our spiritual journey.
Listing our goals is a powerful way to apply this principle. A list gives structure to our intentions, breaking down big dreams into achievable, measurable steps. Without defined goals, our efforts are easily sidetracked by distractions, or worse, we lose sight of what we originally set out to accomplish. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” In business, as in faith, vision and purpose sustain us through challenges and setbacks.
As we list our goals, we should also consider the “costs” associated with each one — not just financial costs, but also time, energy, and opportunity costs. By doing this, we gain clarity about what each goal will require and whether we have the resources or need to seek additional support. This exercise can help us recognize areas where we may need God’s guidance, reminding us to rely on Him rather than solely on our own understanding.
Goal-setting with God allows us to prioritize His purpose for our work. Committing our plans to God (Proverbs 16:3) opens the door to a divine partnership where our faith drives us, not just our ambition. We can confidently ask Him to bless the work of our hands, knowing we are intentional stewards of the gifts He’s given.
Today, let’s take a moment to list our business goals and pray over them. Let’s examine the resources, time, and dedication required, asking God to guide each step. In counting the cost, we honor Him by building with wisdom and faith, trusting that He who gave the vision will provide for its fulfillment.
Reflection Questions:
- What are the specific goals I feel called to pursue, and have I taken the time to break them down into clear, achievable steps?
- In considering the “costs” of my goals, what resources, time, or support will I need, and how can I invite God’s guidance to help fulfill these needs?
